As commonly summarized from Peoria's zoning ordinance, section 21-312: no fence or wall within or bounding the front yard over 3 feet, side and rear walls up to about 7 feet, and a city permit for anything over 7 feet. Corner lots keep a clear sight area. This is our reading as of November 2026; the city's current text controls.
The limits most homeowners meet
| Where | Limit |
|---|---|
| Within or bounding the front yard | 3 feet |
| Side and rear yards | About 7 feet |
| Over 7 feet | City permit required |
| In the street right-of-way | Not without a city permit |

Where can the wall sit?
The ordinance says walls and gates go entirely on your own property, unless you and the neighbor agree in writing to a shared wall on the division line.
What about retaining walls?
Peoria's code requires a retaining wall over 3 feet to be designed by a civil or structural engineer and approved before construction.
Your HOA may be stricter
Most Peoria communities have CC&Rs that set wall height, block type and color. Get association approval before raising or extending a wall.
