Do I need to call 811 before digging in Arizona?

Updated November 2026

Yes. Anyone whose work moves earth, homeowners included, must contact Arizona 811 before digging. Utilities then have two full working days to respond, and you should not dig until every utility on the ticket has. The service is free.

Why it matters for walls and fences

Block wall footings run long and fairly deep, and post holes go down several feet. Both can reach gas, electric, water, sewer and fiber lines.

How it works

  1. Outline the dig area in white paint or flags.
  2. Contact Arizona 811 by phone or online.
  3. Wait for every utility on the ticket to mark or clear.
  4. Dig carefully by hand near the marks.

How long are marks good for?

The Arizona Corporation Commission says markings must stay visible and valid for 15 working days. Longer jobs need the ticket updated.
